Moontide Riverside Lodge is shaded by 400-year-old milkwood trees, and offers direct access to the river – great for swimming, canoeing (there are several canoes available) and birdwatching. Rates include a full South African breakfast: weather permitting, this is served on the deck overlooking the river – one of the loveliest locations on the Garden Route. Management is on hand for advice on what to do, and assist with activity or restaurant bookings. Should you prefer to dine in for dinner, several local restaurants offer deliveries, and Stone Cottage is equipped for self catering.

Stone Cottage is a century-old two-bedroomed thatched cottage with shared bathroom and well-equipped kitchenette, ideal for a family. The bathroom has a tub and separate shower.

Both bedrooms open onto a private garden with outdoor seating and fountain, shaded by a 400-year-old milkwood. The kitchenette has a gas hob and convection/microwave oven. The cottage is also equipped with a stocked bar fridge, coffee and tea station (with plunger for coffee), safe and hair dryer. Towelling gowns and toiletries are provided.

Wilderness is a short distance east from the city of George, through the Kaaiman's River Pass. It is known for its long white sand beach, and is surrounded by the Garden Route National Park, an intricate tapestry of habitats: rivers, lakes, forests, fynbos, estuaries and beaches.

Easy and scenic striking distance from Knysna (40 minutes) and Mossel Bay (45 minutes); and an hour from Oudtshoorn or Plettenberg Bay.

Rates include a full South African breakfast.

Children under 2 stay free of charge; kids aged 2 - 12 years pay 50% of the adult rate.

The lodge has deceptively large grounds; characterful décor; good service and staff knowledgeable about off-the-beaten-track experiences… like taking the scenic Seven Passes Road to Knysna (engineered by Thomas Bain and Adam de Smidt in 1883) and returning via the N2. Or visiting Gericke’s Point at low tide to dip in the natural rock pools.

Note that Wilderness beach is beautiful and stretches for many kilometers – ideal for walking but riptides here can be strong; the river however is warm, shallow and clean.
